Hamish is one of our clients (we’ve changed his name for his privacy), and today we’re sharing some insight into his life and how, with his Case Manager, he has worked to make changes that will benefit him and allow him to maintain the independence he enjoys.

Hamish acquired a brain injury in 1999 when he was involved in a road traffic accident. The event left him facing lasting challenges, including issues with manual dexterity and balance, slurred speech, memory loss, and a shortened attention span. In addition, Hamish’s injury meant he was often displaying frustration and aggressive behaviours, lacked awareness of dangerous situations and he struggled with disinhibited behaviour and verbal outbursts. Over the years, these challenges led to frequent interactions with the police and a reluctance to engage with professionals who were offering support.

Hamish purchased a property about 20 years ago and he received support via a care agency for 10 hours per day, 7 days per week, which has meant he could remain living independently, which is important to him. However, in 2024, concerns about Hamish’s ongoing care and living arrangements led to his financial deputy seeking assistance from StanleySmith Case Management. Upon discussions, the goal was to establish a trusting relationship between Hamish and his Case Manager, who would enhance the management of his care, whilst also improving the support he received from his care agency.

At first, Hamish was hesitant, having previously declined Case Management support. Understanding this, StanleySmith assigned Matt as Hamish’s Case Manager, as he is an experienced Case Manager with extensive knowledge in working with individuals who have an acquired brain injury and exhibit complex behaviour. Rather than enforcing immediate changes, Matt took a gentle and structured approach, starting with a trial period of remote Case Management, complimented by semi-regular meetings. Matt’s primary focus was to build rapport with Hamish and provide informal assistance as required.

Early on, it became clear that consistency and familiarity were key to engaging with Hamish. With this in mind, Matt introduced structured monthly ‘catch-up’ meetings, ensuring that Hamish had a familiar routine to rely on. Alongside this, Matt worked closely with Hamish’s care team, support workers and financial deputy to gain a complete understanding of his needs, ascertaining the best approach to providing Case Management input.

Over the course of 12 months, a significant change took place. Hamish, who once was resistant to professional engagement, began participating in Case Management sessions without frustration or behavioural challenges. He became actively involved in decisions regarding his property, care arrangements and social care involvement. This meant that all involved knew his wishes and were able to work towards their mutual goals.

Moving forward, Hamish and Matt continue to strengthen their working relationship, with Case Management now addressing various aspects of Hamish’s life, from risk management to liaising with Adult Social Care, the police and independent capacity assessors. One of Matt’s key focuses is improving Hamish’s overall health and safety whilst enhancing the effectiveness of his care teams.

Perhaps one of the most telling signs of Hamish’s progress is his continued attendance at monthly meetings, where he even now enjoys a coffee with Matt! This seemingly small act highlights a major success, of a once-reluctant individual now engaging in his own support, demonstrating trust and taking steps towards a more secure and supported future.

Hamish’s journey with StanleySmith and Case Manager Matt is a testament to the power of patience, persistence and the right support system. His story highlights how a tailored and compassionate approach can break down barriers and build trust, ultimately improving Hamish’s future.
